When the palm trees in Florida lose their leaves and hold on to their nuts, A Day To Remember tour bus has probably just whizzed by on route to Vienna. With song All I Want, they wrote the soundtrack for a whole generation, Night at a Museum and The bloody path of god lend them lines and even Kelly Clarkson is not spared. A Day To Remember wander between genres, blast hymns to sing a long to, as well as brutal riffs, into the crowd, get people and vocal chords moving. A definite highlight at Rock in Vienna.
Singing along to the Broilers is also compulsory. Not without reason, they are viewed as the legitimate heirs of Die Toten Hosen, not only sharing the home town Düsseldorf but also the same passion for catchy tunes. A title from the last album Noir can confidently be used as a guideline: “Nur nach vorne gehen“, go ahead, head for the stage, everything else will happen by itself.
Other bands simply play the world’s most beautiful city, the musical stronghold from Thuringia, Germany – Heaven Shall Burn, enjoy a long standing relationship. They shook the walls at the Gasometer opening, recorded their first DVD in Vienna, played a legendary 300 Show in the ((szene)), brought the circle pit and the wall of death to the Danube Island Festival and celebrated the worldwide release of two CDs live in Vienna. Heaven Shall Burn are the figureheads of a whole scene, they don’t just impress again and again musically, their lyrics have substance, showing respect for legendary personalities like Victor Jara. Heaven will burn and the Island will quake and the storms will call for you when HSB take the stage.
May it be a little more complex? Mikael Åkerfeldt and his band mates from Opeth have master the feat of combining quiet acoustic parts and thundering death metal in songs well worth listening to, progressive death metal and it’s best!
Declared the best alternative rock band on the planet by Spin Magazine, the gentlemen in suits made themselves scarce over the summer, they only played a few shows, a Best of programme. We are looking forward to The Hives at Rock in Vienna!
