Freddie Mercury Street in Munich announced!
Munich gets it’s very own Freddie Mercury Street: This is the unanimous resolution of Munich’s city council. Five years ago, the radio station Rock Antenne and its rock community put in the official application, which makes today’s decision a very special one for all of them. Now, the rock community celebrates a dream that will come true soon.
It all started with an idea of Rock Antenne in October 2015. Together with its listeners the radio station started the campaign “Rock Antenne Rock The Road” – more rocking street names for Germany”. There are so many places in Germany that shaped the world of rock and its stars. For example: Hamburg has The Beatles or in Berlin you find a Frank Zappa Street. Rock Antenne asked their radio community for their suggestions and in the end two cities stood out: Landsberg am Lech with “Johnny Cash Road” and Munich needed a “Freddie Mercury Street”. Rock Antenne filled out two official applications and personally delivered them to both cities in October 2015.
“It’s thanks to Rock Antenne that we will get a Freddie Mercury Street. It took us some time, but that’s just what it takes sometimes. Next year, it’ll be the 30th anniversary of Freddie’s death. I am very pleased that we got the decision beforehand.” says Nikoluas Gradl, city councilman of Munich (SPD).
For the radio station Rock Antenne this is a particular huge success because they were waiting for this decision to be made for five years. Guy Frankel, Rock Antenne Rockboss, couldn’t be happier about his dream now finally coming true when he heard about the council’s decision: “Freddie Mercury lived, loved and recorded five albums in Munich – this decision was so necessary. What a great way to honour one the biggest, most genius and greatest voices in the (rock) world.”
Freddie Mercury Street will be located south of the Olympic Park and near the Olympic Hall, where Queen performed so many times throughout their career.
