Rock am Ring 2016 hit by a thunderstorms, lightning strikes injured more than 80 people!
Lightning strikes injured more than 80 people during the thunderstorms which hit the German festival Rock am Ring at the airport in Mendig, over the weekend. 15 of them are in a serious condition, including one person who had to be resuscitated at the site!
31st year of Rock am Ring festival which took place this weekend at the airport in Mendig was sold out a few months before the start – there was sold more than 90.000 tickets. At the festival had to perform Volbeat, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Sabbath, Billy Talent, Bullet For My Valentine and more other bands. Weather forecasts for a festival was not very optimistic. As a result, organizers had to take a decision to prohibit crowd-surfing, circle pits, mosh pits and other things which are not safe and may cause injury to a festival visitors.
Festival started at Friday afternoon and despite the rainy weather with tons of mud and a few thunderstorms, the program at the stages were running without any significant changes. However, most of the Saturday performances had to be postponed or cancelled due to a bad weather conditions. Several thunderstorms with a lightning strikes which hit the festival over the weekend, injured at least more than 80 people. 15 of them ended in hospital in a serious condition.
Because weather forecast for Sunday promises more extremely thunderstorms with the possibility of hail, organizers had to cancel remaining program, including performances of Black Sabbath, Korn or Bring Me The Horizon.
The rainy weather and thunderstorms didn’t skipped also the twin festival in Nurnberg, Rock im Park. Fortunately, from this festival are not reported any injuries caused by weather and the program is running as it was announced.
Our team were originally set to attend Rock am Ring festival at the airport in Mendig, but due to an unexpected technical problems with the car on Thursday, were unable to ride there.
